Alopecia (from the Greek alopex) refers to the abnormal loss or rarefaction of hair. The term is considered a synonym for baldness . It can affect the scalp or other areas of the skin where there is hair, including eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits, genital region and beard.
Alopecia can be classified into a multitude of groups, depending on its origin and manifestations, but the most common form is androgenic alopecia, also called androgenetic alopecia or common baldness , which is responsible for 95% of cases and mainly affects men, less frequently to women, and it owes its name to the fact that it is caused by the action of male hormones or androgens on the hair follicle, causing its progressive miniaturization.
Other common forms of alopecia are alopecia areata, in which hair loss is not permanent and is commonly limited to a certain area; alopecia universalis, which is the extensive form of alopecia areata; and scarring alopecia , which is caused by destruction of the hair follicle and is, therefore, irreversible.
